The pig barn
The Swine Clinic’s housing facilities are divided into two parts: the main barn and the isolation barn.
The barns are equipped with pens suitable for different age categories — from suckling piglets to boars. All pens are generally bedded with straw. In good weather, pigs can also be kept in outdoor runs.
The majority of practical training for students on individual animals takes place in the barns. Clinical exercises and examinations are conducted, as well as minor surgeries, blood or cerebrospinal fluid sampling, and joint punctures. For more advanced diagnostics (X-ray, CT, MRI) or major surgeries, pigs are transferred to the corresponding departments of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
The isolation barn is used, for example, to house and examine pet pigs (mini pigs, hobby pigs).
